Soundsystem

When it comes to sound, our love and dedication know no bounds. In fact, it’s an understatement to say we are merely passionate. The truth is, we are truly obsessed, considering the blood, sweat, and tears that go into setting up our sound system. From the painstaking process of loading and unloading equipment to the meticulous task of levelling up turntables and ensuring every component is working flawlessly, running a sound system requires unwavering attention to detail.

Let’s start with the heart of our set-up – the speakers. We have four Klipschorns, known for their domestic high efficiency that eliminates the need for additional amplification. These speakers possess a unique design that creates an unmatched listening experience. Once you’ve heard them in action, you’ll be hooked. However, when it comes to using them for parties, it’s crucial to understand their limitations and skillfully set them up to optimise their performance.

To complement the Klipschorns, we have recently added two JBL speakers featuring twin 15” bass drivers with compression midrange and horn, enhancing the depth and impact of our sound.

Amplification is a realm of constant change. We have experimented with a range of brands, including Mark Levinson, Chord, Quad, and others. While Class A amplifiers offer exceptional sound quality, they can be challenging for long stretches, occasionally going into standby mode. Therefore, we carefully select amplifiers that strike the right balance between power and reliability.

Moving on to mixers, we previously relied on the Bozak CMA-10-2DL, which has a storied history from its use in Paradise Garage to the Sound Factory. However, we have recently upgraded to the Isonoe 420 mixer. Although we value the Bozak, the Isonoe provides us with more control and flexibility, allowing us to fine-tune our sound to perfection.

When it comes to turntables, the Technics SL1200MK2 remains our steadfast choice. Renowned for its stability and quartz lock, this turntable is a reliable workhorse. We have modified the tone-arms to classic Rega RB300’s, adding a touch of history to our set-up.

As for cartridges, we have experimented with various options, and have recently switched from Hana moving coils to Audio Technica Shibata moving magnet cartridges. The latter allows for quicker needle swapping in case of any issues.

Graham Slee pre-amps are our go-to choice – this UK company has a profound understanding of crafting exceptional hi-fi components. To ensure a seamless transition from digital to vinyl, we warm up the Pioneer CDJ’s with Ifi Neo Dac’s, creating a smooth flow between the two.

In the realm of running a sound system, it’s not just about the equipment and technical aspects. It’s about the passion and dedication that drive us. Attention to detail is paramount, ensuring that every element of our set-up aligns perfectly to create an unforgettable experience for our audience. From the choice of speakers to amplifiers, mixers, turntables, and beyond, every decision is made with the sole purpose of delivering exceptional sound quality and capturing the essence of the music we love.

So, when you find yourself immersed in the mesmerising sounds of our system, remember the countless hours, relentless effort, and unyielding commitment that went into creating the sonic landscape that surrounds you.

It is our labour of love, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
